This workshop focuses on techniques to help students recognize the bigger world they are a part of and their responsibility to it. You will be able to use concrete strategies that impact the achievement of students from poverty, better understand how economic class affects behaviors and mindsets, develop stronger relationships with your students to impact behavior and achievement, identify several key instructional strategies that meet the needs of the under-resourced learner, understand the hidden rules of economic classes and how they apply to their classrooms, and reduce your students’ discipline referrals.
Package Three: ESL
We understand the intricacies that go along with everyday challenges in education. This action-packed workshop will cover 3 big ideas for ESL learners:
- Understanding What Proficiency Means
- No matter what proficiency assessment your English Language Learners will be given, our team is here to help break it down so you as the instructor know how to prepare your students. Together, we will analyze the tasks students are asked to perform, identify vocabulary that is essential for proficiency, and plan for infusion of those skills into the instructional block.
- Response to Intervention and English Language Learners
- Pinpointing exactly where our English Language Learners are struggling and responding to it is critical in the process of supporting kids to proficiency. As a team, we will discuss which pieces of data are used to identify students’ challenges and show you how to match interventions to those areas that need to be addressed.
- Differentiated Instruction for ELLs
- Our English Language Learners need very specific instruction that incorporates best practices at every possible opportunity. We will explore how you can seamlessly plan for these opportunities so your students can make the necessary connections to absorb the language.
